Must See!

"Zana Aunty," as the kids call her is a mere photographer from the States who went to India to take pictures of women working in the Red Light District. She did indeed do this for the beginning portion of her trip there however not for long; as she started to grow fond of the kids. Kids, who buzzed around the workplace, playing with one another and doing a variety of jobs for their mothers while the mothers were busy with their work. Forced into such an atmosphere these kids faced an undesirable future ahead as the girls were set to “join the line” and the boys…well there really wasn’t much for the boys to do considering their status.

Zana, building on her relationship with these kids, began a photography class in hopes that it would aid them even slightly to learn a trade of sorts. She gave each of them a camera, taught them how to use it and sent them off to explore the world of photography. Along with their exploration and Zana’s ambition to help these kids, came the birth of the documentary, “Born into Brothels”.

Zana Briski helped these children, shown above-Tapasi, Suchitra, Shanti, Puja, Manik, Kochi, Gour, and Avijit-, in giving them an opportunity to explore something that they themselves would never have reach of. She stayed there for two years off-and-on trying her best to get these children somewhere. With the documentary…which received rave reviews and accolades of awards brought an awareness of these kids and the mere concept that one individual can indeed make a difference in the world. All that is needed is ambition.

In light of “Born into Brothels,” a foundation was found called “Kids with Cameras” which attempts to reach out to these children and giving them opportunities that they never fathomed. Photography workshops are set up in Calcutta, the origin of the foundation, as well as in Haiti, Jerusalem, and Cairo. Galleries and auctions are held selling the children’s pieces where all the proceeds go back into the foundation to help them further their reach.

I have not gone into details of the movie as you should all definitely take some time out to watch it on your own. Surely, it will tug on your heart strings…and is absolutely an amazing experience.

Born into Brothels- a must see!

Suga I'll surely take some time out to watch this movie. I love watching movies that are somewhat "realistic" rather than the bollywood bullshit (leaving out the good ones).

Therefore, I shall comment more thoroughly after watching the movie.

Howz uni goin?

sugga bugga bugga :o)sorrie for the delay.. my aunts here frm india n plus other stuff lol but im here ..

I labh the new post ..i've watched half of the movie it was real good but i was at a frnds place.. i'll prollie rent it over the weekend to watch the entire movie(that reminds me i havent returned my x-box game from blockbuster) lol

This movie was nominated in the oscars n won best documentary..props to that :)so we rented it n we rented the notebook..n u noe it was like get together for my frnd's b-day n grls dominate the kitchen n the tv..so as we were watchin my frnd she goes lets watch the note book cuz den the grlz hada leave..n she reallie wanted to see it.. we let
her cuz she made good food :p so i missed the other movie but its worth watchin i'd wana finish it..

Like most of it till i watched saw the kids usuallie documentaries r so borin n its always bout the person instead of the subject..this movie is diff it lets the kids talk about themselves their families n their life..but i've heard from a journalist from my campus - Columbia University..that that the efforts by Ms. Briski and Mr. Kauffman which were able to uplift the children from the poverty and destitution they live in accordin to the documentary wasnt true.. she visited these children a number of times during the last couple of years and found out that almost all the children are now living even a worse life than they were in before Ms. Briski began working with them... dono nethin in detail though ..

Not Writin a textbook this time :p

4u,
Definitely rent it...and its definitely real...youll enjoy it...
And hey...its not ALL bollywood bullshit...good u added "leaving out the good ones"..lol..er else..:p

But yea tell me what u think after uv seen it k :)

Zoollu,
Yea you tooo go rent it this weekend...u know what it's all about. And i can totally relate to the girls wanting to watch The Notebook...that too was oOo sooo good:)

But yea about the children now...thats weird that the journalist would say that. I mean i dont know if its true but if you watch the extras of the movie..Zana goes and visits the children, i think last year or this year, but sometime recently...and shows us the kids and what they were up to. The majority if not all of them are going to school now and Avijit even got a scholarship to a high school in the states. So i only hope that this is in-fact the situation now and that the kids are leading better lives.

And ty for the omission of the textbook :p
